Research Assistant
Position Summary:
We are seeking 3 Research Assistants to assist in a research project analyzing state legal statutes regulating firearm access by individuals who are intoxicated or have a history of alcohol misuse. Working closely with Dr. Diana Silver and Professor Jean Bae, JD, students will engage in quantitative analysis, coding legal statutes, and contributing to research on this important public health issue.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coding Legal Statutes: Analyze and code a range of state statutes related to firearm access for individuals with alcohol misuse history or those who are intoxicated. This will involve extracting key information, organizing it for quantitative analysis, and ensuring consistency and accuracy in coding.
- Data Management: Assist in managing and organizing the coded data in preparation for statistical analysis.
- Regular Meetings with Principal Investigators: Meet regularly with Dr. Diana Silver and Professor Jean Bae for project updates, discussions, and guidance on research direction.
- Literature Review & Background Research: Assist with reviewing relevant legal and public health literature related to firearm access and alcohol misuse.
- Data Analysis Support: Provide support for statistical analysis under the direction of the PIs, helping to identify trends and patterns in the data.
- Project Reporting: Assist with the creation of reports and presentations summarizing the findings from the analysis.
Qualifications:
- Current Enrollment in a relevant undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., Public Health, Law, Political Science, Sociology, Data Science, or related fields).
- Strong Attention to Detail: Ability to accurately code and analyze legal text.
- Familiarity with Legal Research is preferred but not required.
- Basic Quantitative Research Skills: Experience with data analysis, coding, or statistical software (e.g., Excel, SPSS, R, or Stata) is a plus.
- Strong Communication Skills: Ability to clearly present research findings and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Organized and Self-Motivated: Ability to manage time effectively and work independently while meeting deadlines.
- Interest in Public Health, Law, and Policy: A passion for understanding the intersection of law, public health, and substance misuse.

Supervisor will meet with the incumbent weekly to ensure they are on the right track.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the contact hour rate for this position is $29-$30 This contact hour rate is based on the collective bargaining agreement with Local 2110.
