Image Processing Internship Summer 2024

The focus of the position is the metallographic analysis of non-irradiated accident tolerant fuel cladding concepts and application of image processing for improved data analysis. Additional focus will be on the non-destructive visual examinations of irradiated nuclear fuel in a hot cell environment. 

Reporting to the Structural Materials Post-Irradiation Examination Manager, you will assist in collection, analysis, and interpretation of test data. This will require coordination of activities with facility operations, review of relevant literature, and analysis of experimental results. You will work with staff in the post-irradiation examinations department and are expected to work in a team setting and in isolation. Documentation of work is required, and presentation of findings and results is expected at the end of the internship. 

This team works a 4x10 schedule and works onsite at the Materials and Fuels Complex near Idaho Falls, Idaho.

Qualifications - External

  • Graduate Student enrolled full time at an accredited college/university studying Nuclear, Mechanical Engineering and Material Science and Engineering.
  • A minimum overall 3.0 GPA
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Applicants are subject to the requirements of DOE O 142.3B, Unclassified Foreign National Access Program.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Undergraduate Internships ($25.65/hour - $30.70/hour)
  • Masters Internships and PhD Internships Pre-Candidacy ($31.75/hour - $34.06/hour)
  • PhD Internships Post-Candidacy ($33.75/hour - $36.06/hour)
  • Eligible interns are provided paid holiday time off, and many of our internships offer travel reimbursements.
  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.
